Renting a boat in Porto-Vecchio: a skippered catamaran week

Porto-Vecchio stands on a hill above its gulf, the southernmost good harbour on Corsica's low, once marshy east coast. The Genoese refounded the town in 1539, and it is still called the city of salt, after salt pans that worked below it from the 18th century until the 2000s.

A 14.5 m sailing catamaran is listed at Marina Porto Vecchio. Its owner describes boarding at a dock in the bay of Saint-Cyprien (San Ciprianu) in neighbouring Lecci, north of the town, where a Genoese tower once guarded the approach to the port. It sails only with the owner's skipper, for one or two weeks from a Saturday.

Around the gulf are the beaches of Cala Rossa, Palombaggia and Santa Giulia; further south lie the Lavezzi islands and the Strait of Bonifacio, with Sardinia's La Maddalena archipelago on the far side. Our South Corsica and Bonifacio route sails this coast leg by leg. If you spend a night in the town marina below the ramparts, book the berth ahead; summer evenings are busy.
