What is Ship O’Hoi?

Ajaccio's two harbours: Tino Rossi and Charles Ornano

Most of the fleet sits in Port Tino Rossi, the harbour on the citadel jetty in Ajaccio's old town, whose harbour office works on VHF channel 9. A few large catamarans and a trimaran lie at Port Charles Ornano on Boulevard Charles Bonaparte, north of the centre, with water and electricity on the pontoons and access around the clock in almost any weather. Catamarans account for nearly every boat, joined by a small power catamaran.

The Gulf of Ajaccio opens some twenty kilometres wide between two lighthouses: Pointe de la Parata with the Îles Sanguinaires to the north, and Capo di Muro to the south. The Sanguinaires are four dark-red porphyry islets, and the lighthouse on Mezu Mare, the largest, stands 80 m above the sea. Beyond them the coast runs north to Sagone and Cargèse and on to Scandola, the route of our Ajaccio and west Corsica itinerary.

Scandola can only be reached from the sea. The reserve covers 1,669 ha, 750 of them water, with a 70 ha integral reserve at its north-western tip, so read the park's rules on anchoring and going ashore before you plan that leg.
