Not always: in Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is no more than 30 kW (40.8 hp) and you stay within 6 nautical miles of the coast. With a bigger engine, further out or on a jet ski you need one; with a skipper you need none. Read our full licence guide.

Renting a boat in Pescara: catamaran weeks on the central Adriatic

Pescara, the largest city in Abruzzo, grew up at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara river, where the old port-canal still runs between the river quays. Just south of the river mouth lies Marina di Pescara, the tourist port built in 1984–1989, with 1,000 berths on fixed and floating pontoons. It has held a Blue Flag without a break since 1990 and works on VHF channel 06, and its entrance faces south-east. The catamaran listed here is based in Pescara and chartered bareboat by the week.

The marina's own table of distances puts the Cerrano marine park 10 nautical miles away, the Costa dei Trabocchi 11 nm and the Tremiti Islands 60 nm down the coast. Straight across the Adriatic, the Croatian island of Vis is about 90 nm.
