Sailing from Nettuno to the Pontine Islands
Nettuno's charter fleet lies in Marina di Nettuno, a Blue Flag marina on Lungomare Matteotti that opened in 1986 and has about 1,000 berths on 15 pontoons. A catamaran starts from Marina di Capo d'Anzio next door. The mix is sailing yachts, catamarans and some motor yachts, plus a few smaller motor boats.
Ashore, Forte Sangallo, built between 1501 and 1503, stands below the medieval old town above the sea, and this shore was part of the Anzio landing of 22 January 1944.
The main reason to sail from here is the Pontine Islands to the south: - Ponza, 21 nautical miles south of San Felice Circeo, with the Chiaia di Luna beach and its sea stacks. - Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi, the smaller islands of the Ponza group. - Ventotene, about 40 km south-east of Ponza, with a Roman harbour cut into the tuff and Santo Stefano 2 km to the east.
Ventotene and Santo Stefano form a marine protected area with strict rules. Boats may cross zone A around Santo Stefano only for scientific purposes, in zone B they must stay more than 500 m from the shore, and zone C, which includes the port, is open to boats. Our guide to the Pontine Islands from Rome turns this into a week's route.
