Not always: in Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is no more than 30 kW (40.8 hp) and you stay within 6 nautical miles of the coast. With a bigger engine, further out or on a jet ski you need one; with a skipper you need none. Read our full licence guide.

Renting a boat in Termoli: a crewed yacht in Molise's only port
Termoli has the only port in Molise. Its old town stands on a promontory beside the harbour, with fishermen's houses, the cathedral, the Swabian castle and trabucchi, fishing platforms over the sea.
The boat listed is a crewed motor yacht of about 23 m for up to six guests, chartered by the week. Its base is given as the south mole of the port. The south moles hold the tourist harbour, Marina di San Pietro, opened in 2009 with around 300 berths for boats of 8 to 30 m.
The obvious crossing is to the Tremiti Islands, about 45 km offshore. Termoli is the only port with ferries to the islands all year, and they berth on the port's main arm, so expect them in the harbour. San Domino has the islands' only sandy beach, Cala delle Arene, and part of the archipelago has been a marine reserve since 1989.
