Brindisi: a harbour facing Greece
Brindisi's harbour has looked east since Roman times, when legions marched to Brundisium and sailed across the Strait of Otranto. Two kinds of boat are listed here. Catamarans and a large sailing yacht are berthed at the Lega Navale Brindisi, the local section of Italy's naval league, and rented by the week, some with a skipper. A trimaran runs skippered cabin cruises from the port's marina on set routes, such as Brindisi to Corfu and Paxos, and some cabins can be booked individually.
The harbour comes in three parts: the industrial outer harbour, closed off by the Punta Riso breakwater that starts from the island of Sant'Andrea; a middle basin; and the inner harbour, reached through the Pigonati canal, whose two arms wrap around the old town. Brindisi is also a ferry port for the Balkans and Turkey, so keep well clear of ships in the canal and the outer harbour.
Up the coast, the Torre Guaceto nature reserve lies 17 km north of the city. Eastwards, the first landfall is Othonoi, the westernmost point of Greece, and our Corfu and Paxos sailing week picks up the Greek side.
