Taranto: catamarans between two seas
The boats on this page are catamarans based in Taranto and rented bareboat by the week: sailing catamarans and a power catamaran.
Taranto lies on two bays. The Mar Grande, the outer bay, holds the commercial port and is sheltered by the Cheradi islands, San Pietro and San Paolo. The Mar Piccolo, inside the old town, is used for fishing and mussel farming. A navigable canal links the two, crossed by the Ponte Girevole, a swing bridge from 1887 that splits the city in two when it opens.
Taranto is also the main base of the Italian navy, and that shapes where you can go. The Cheradi islands are military property: landing and navigation are forbidden around San Paolo, and only part of San Pietro has recently opened to the public. The sea around the islands is known for the dolphins and other cetaceans that live there.
