Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is the charter base for the island's south coast. Its yachts sail from Marina di Cagliari and Marina di Bonaria, right on the city waterfront and a short taxi ride from the airport. East lie Villasimius and Capo Carbonara, west the beaches of Chia and the islands of Sant'Antioco and San Pietro. Compare sailboats and catamarans, bareboat or with a skipper.

Charter bases in Cagliari
Cagliari's charter boats lie in two marinas on the city harbour, Marina di Cagliari and Marina di Bonaria, both within walking distance of the old town and about 15 minutes from Cagliari-Elmas airport. The fleet is a mix of sailing yachts and catamarans, most of them rented by the week from Saturday.
Sailing the south coast
Heading east, you round Capo Carbonara to Villasimius, whose marine protected area has some of the clearest water in Sardinia; anchoring is restricted in parts of it. Heading west, the Costa del Sud runs past Pula, Chia and Capo Teulada to Sant'Antioco and Carloforte on the island of San Pietro, where there is a smaller charter base. The south coast is less crowded in summer than the Costa Smeralda.
Bareboat or with a skipper?
For bareboat charter in Italy the skipper needs a recognised licence, and a VHF radio certificate is usually expected. Without them, book a skipper. Most yachts in northern Sardinia sail from Olbia and Portisco; see all of Sardinia and catamaran charter in Sardinia.
Chartering a yacht in Cagliari
Cagliari's charter yachts lie on the city waterfront, in two marinas inside the port: Marina di Cagliari, where most of the listed boats are based, and Marina di Bonaria (Su Siccu), with 302 berths opposite the Bonaria sanctuary. Because both are within the commercial port, anchoring and fishing are banned there and the speed limit is 3 knots. Nearly the whole fleet is monohull sailing boats and catamarans on weekly charter, with a motor yacht as well.
The Gulf of Angels lies in front of the city. Poetto beach runs for about 8 km from the Sella del Diavolo towards Quartu Sant'Elena, and further east Capo Carbonara at Villasimius is a marine protected area that takes in the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara. Its rules come in zones: zone A is closed to pleasure boats without the park's permission, zones B and C have a 10-knot limit, and zone D, a belt reaching 2 miles offshore, allows 20 knots. Moor on the park's own buoys or where the seabed is suitable.
West of Cagliari the coast leads to Nora, the Phoenician and later Roman city on Capo di Pula about 40 km away, and on to Chia with its beaches Su Giudeu and Tuerredda and its 17th-century tower. Our South Sardinia itinerary from Carloforte to Villasimius links both directions into one week.
