Carloforte: the only town on San Pietro
Every yacht on this page is handed over in Carloforte, the only town on Isola di San Pietro, a 51 km² island about 7 km off Sardinia's south-west coast. The fleet is almost all monohull sailing yachts, from about 30 to 48 feet, plus a catamaran, and is chartered by the week. The town was founded in 1739 by coral fishers of Ligurian origin who had lived on Tabarka off Tunisia, and people here still speak their dialect, Tabarchino.
The harbour lies on the island's low, sandy east coast. The west and north coasts are steep and rocky, with sea caves and a few small beaches, and the lighthouse on Capo Sandalo watches over the western cliffs. Off the north-east tip are the tiny Isola dei Ratti and Isola Piana, where the buildings of what was once Sardinia's most important tuna trap still stand. Calasetta, on neighbouring Sant'Antioco, is the obvious first hop across the channel.
Ferries link San Pietro with Calasetta and Portovesme, so watch for them in the channel. The mistral hits the western side hardest, so save that coast for calm days. Our southern Sardinia route covers the island and the coast east to Villasimius.
