Not always: in Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is no more than 30 kW (40.8 hp) and you stay within 6 nautical miles of the coast. With a bigger engine, further out or on a jet ski you need one; with a skipper you need none. Read our full licence guide.

Chartering a yacht in Alghero: Capo Caccia and Porto Conte
A large sailing yacht with five cabins for up to twelve guests is based in Alghero's port on Sardinia's north-west coast and chartered by the week.
West of town, the bay of Porto Conte opens between the limestone headlands of Capo Caccia and Punta Giglio. About 6 km deep and 2.5 km wide, it was the Romans' port of the nymphs and is sheltered from north-westerly winds. At the foot of Capo Caccia's 110 m cliffs, the entrance to Neptune's Grotto sits only about 1 m above the sea, so the cave can only be visited in calm water.
This coast is part of the Capo Caccia–Isola Piana marine protected area, where mooring-buoy fields have been laid in several coves, among them Cala dell'Olandese and Lazzaretto. Check the harbour master's current ordinances before you anchor.
