Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to charter a yacht in France?
Do I need a licence to sail a yacht in France?
When is the best time for a yacht charter in France?
Where can you charter a yacht in France?
France has three very different charter areas, and this page lists them all together: the Mediterranean coast of the mainland, the island of Corsica and the Atlantic coast of Brittany.
The biggest single base is Port du Crouesty in Arzon, at the entrance to the Gulf of Morbihan in southern Brittany. On the Côte d'Azur, the yachts sail from Cogolin, Grimaud (Port Grimaud) and Saint-Tropez in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, from Bormes-les-Mimosas, from Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer near Toulon and from Cannes. Further west there are bases in Marseille, Sète, La Grande-Motte and Canet-en-Roussillon. In Corsica, you start from Ajaccio, Propriano, Bonifacio, Pianottoli-Caldarello or Porto-Vecchio.
Côte d'Azur, Corsica or Brittany?
The Côte d'Azur suits a week of short hops between elegant harbours and the islands of Hyères; see yacht charter on the French Riviera. Corsica is wilder, with granite coves, marine reserves and Sardinia just across the Strait of Bonifacio; see yacht charter in Corsica. Brittany is tidal sailing: the Gulf of Morbihan is full of islands and strong currents, and Belle-Île, Houat and Hoëdic lie just offshore. On the Mediterranean the season runs from about May to October, in Brittany mainly from June to September.
Do you need a licence to charter a yacht in France?
In France you need no licence to skipper a sailing boat at sea, but a motorboat over 6 hp (4.5 kW) requires a boat licence such as the French permis plaisance. For a bareboat charter, the charter companies usually ask for an ICC or proof of sailing experience. If you have neither, book a skipper; some yachts also come fully crewed. Most charters run Saturday to Saturday. More destinations: the Mediterranean, Italy and Croatia.
