Port du Crouesty, Arzon's charter base
Almost every boat listed for Arzon is berthed at Port du Crouesty, which the town calls the largest port in Morbihan, with 1,432 pontoon berths. It was built in 1973 on former marshland. The fleet is nearly all sailing yachts in a wide range of sizes, plus a catamaran.
Arzon, which includes Port-Navalo, has open sea on one side and an enclosed gulf on the other. On one side are Quiberon Bay and the open Atlantic, with Houat, about 10 km south-east of the Quiberon peninsula, and its neighbour Hoëdic, both protected as Natura 2000 sites. On the other, through an entrance just 900 m wide at Port-Navalo, lies the Gulf of Morbihan, an inland sea of 115 km² with about forty islands and islets. Only two of them, Île-aux-Moines and Île-d'Arz, are municipalities of their own.
The gulf entrance is the one passage to plan with care. The tide runs close to 9 knots through the Port-Navalo narrows, and the Jument current between Île Berder and Île de la Jument can reach 9.1 knots at the peak of the tide, the second strongest in Europe after the Raz Blanchard. Enter and leave with the stream, using the tide tables. The gulf has also been a regional natural park since 2014.
