The town fills the bay between Capo Schisò and Capo Taormina on Sicily's Ionian coast, below the hill town of Taormina. It has two harbours: a traditional fishing port and a larger modern one where tenders bring cruise passengers ashore, so expect some traffic around the quays.
An easy outing leads north across the bay towards Taormina and Isola Bella, a small island owned by the Region of Sicily since 1990. It has been a nature reserve of just over 10 ha since 1998, and a narrow path sometimes joins it to the beach. To the south, the Alcantara river marks the edge of the municipality. On Capo Schisò itself lie the remains of ancient Naxos and a 15th-century tower.
