Do I need a boat licence in Italy?

Not always: in Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is no more than 30 kW (40.8 hp) and you stay within 6 nautical miles of the coast. With a bigger engine, further out or on a jet ski you need one; with a skipper you need none. Read our full licence guide.

Renting a boat in Siracusa: a motor yacht by Ortigia

Siracusa's harbours lie on opposite sides of Ortigia, the small island that forms the city's historic centre and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Porto Grande and the Porto Piccolo, also called Marmoreo, are linked by a channel crossed by bridges, and together they can take around 1,000 boats.

A 23 m motor yacht is listed in the port, with three cabins for six guests. Day charters are possible, and it can come with a captain.

Across the Porto Grande, the Plemmirio marine protected area covers 14.35 km of coast along the Maddalena peninsula out to Capo Murro di Porco, where the Gulf of Noto begins. The reserve has its own zones and mooring rules, so check them before you stop, and its seabed holds amphorae and wrecks from many periods. Further south are the small harbours of Ognina and Fontane Bianche.
