Where to rent a boat in Sicily
The north coast and the Aeolian Islands: Capo d'Orlando and Portorosa have the largest charter fleets in Sicily. From here Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea and Stromboli – seven volcanic islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – are a few hours' sail away.
Palermo and the west: Palermo, Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo open up the Gulf of Castellammare and the Zingaro nature reserve. From Trapani and Marsala you reach the Egadi Islands – Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo.
The south-east: Marina di Ragusa and Siracusa have small fleets for the Ionian coast, with Catania and Mount Etna to the north.

Sailing around the Aeolian Islands
The Aeolian Islands have few marinas and many exposed anchorages, so plan each night's stop with the forecast. A classic week from Capo d'Orlando or Portorosa takes in Vulcano's hot springs, Lipari's harbour, Salina's vineyards and an evening sail past Stromboli's eruptions.
Bareboat or with a skipper?
To charter a yacht bareboat in Sicily, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC, and charter companies usually ask for a VHF radio certificate (SRC). If nobody in your group has them, add a skipper. Most charter yachts are rented by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and each listing shows the price and availability for your dates before you book. June and September are quieter and cheaper than July and August.
