Where to rent a boat in Sardinia
The north-east: most of Sardinia's charter fleet is based at Portisco, Olbia, Porto Rotondo, Golfo Aranci and Cannigione near Arzachena. From here the Costa Smeralda, the Maddalena archipelago and, across the Strait of Bonifacio, Corsica are all within a day's sail. Olbia airport is a short drive from the marinas.
The south: Cagliari and Carloforte, on the island of San Pietro, are the bases for the quieter south and south-west coasts, with long beaches and fewer boats.
The west: Alghero is the start for the Riviera del Corallo and the cliffs of Capo Caccia.

Sailing in the Maddalena archipelago
The islands between Sardinia and Corsica form the La Maddalena National Park. Boats need a park permit to sail and anchor there, and some areas are closed to anchoring to protect the sea bed; your charter company can tell you how to get the permit. The mistral, a north-westerly wind, can blow hard through the Strait of Bonifacio, so plan your route with the forecast.
Bareboat or with a skipper?
To hire a yacht bareboat in Sardinia, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC, and charter companies usually ask for a VHF radio certificate (SRC). If nobody in your group has them, add a skipper. Most charter yachts are hired by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and each listing shows the price and availability for your dates before you book. June and September are quieter and cheaper than July and August.
