Charter bases on the Tuscan coast
No single Tuscan marina has a big fleet, so this page brings all of them together.
Castiglioncello (Marina Cala de' Medici) is the largest base, south of Livorno. San Vincenzo and Piombino are the closest bases to Elba: from Piombino the island is only a few miles across the channel. Punta Ala and Scarlino face Elba from the south, and Talamone is the start for Giglio, Giannutri and Monte Argentario.
Sailing the Tuscan Archipelago
Elba is the heart of a Tuscan sailing week, with Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro and many bays to anchor in. From there, Capraia lies to the north-west and Giglio and Giannutri to the south. The islands belong to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park: some areas are closed to anchoring, and Pianosa and Montecristo have strict landing rules, so check the park rules before you set off.
Bareboat or with a skipper?
Most boats in Tuscany are sailing yachts rented bareboat by the week, Saturday to Saturday. The skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC and usually a VHF certificate; otherwise, add a skipper. More Italian sailing areas: the Amalfi Coast, the Italian Riviera and all of Italy.
