Charter bases on the Côte d'Azur
The Riviera bases on this page run from Toulon to Cannes. Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer (Port Pin Rolland) lies on the peninsula that shelters the harbour of Toulon. Bormes-les-Mimosas faces the islands of Hyères. In the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the yachts sail from Les Marines de Cogolin, Port Grimaud and Saint-Tropez itself. Cannes is the base in the east, with the Esterel hills just to the west.
Îles d'Hyères, Saint-Tropez and the Lérins Islands
From Bormes or Toulon, the islands of Hyères are the highlight: Porquerolles, Port-Cros, a national park with strict rules on anchoring and fishing, and Le Levant, most of which is a military zone. East of them come Cavalaire, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the red rocks of the Esterel, and off Cannes the Lérins Islands, Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat. Harbours are full in July and August, so book berths early or plan nights at anchor.
Mistral, licences and skippers
The mistral is the wind to plan around: it blows from the north-west down the Rhône valley, often for several days, and is strongest in the west, around Toulon and Hyères. Keep a spare day in your plan and follow the charter base's advice. You need no licence to skipper a sailing yacht in France, but for a bareboat charter the company usually asks for an ICC or proof of sailing experience; motor yachts over 6 hp need a licence. Otherwise, book a skipper or a crewed yacht. See also Corsica and yacht charter in France.
