On a bareboat charter you hire the yacht without a skipper and sail it yourself: you plan the route, choose the harbours and bays and set the pace. Croatia is one of the easiest places in Europe to do it, with more than a thousand islands, short distances between them and marinas all along the coast. Compare sailboats and catamarans available bareboat below, with the price and availability for your week.

Is there a security deposit on a bareboat charter?
What is a bareboat charter?
Bareboat means the boat comes without a skipper or crew. One of your group acts as skipper and is responsible for the yacht, the crew and the route for the week. The charter company hands over the boat ready to sail and shows you round it at check-in; after that, where you go is up to you.
If you would rather relax while someone else sails, add a skipper, or see yachts with skipper and crew in Croatia.
Licence rules for bareboat charter in Croatia
In Croatia, the skipper of a bareboat yacht needs a boating licence that Croatia recognises, and at least one person on board needs a VHF radio certificate such as the SRC. The charter company checks the documents at check-in, so ask in advance if you are unsure whether your licence is accepted. If nobody in your group holds a licence, add a professional skipper.
Where to go on a bareboat charter in Croatia
First bareboat charter: central Dalmatia, from Split or Trogir, has short hops between Šolta, Brač, Hvar and Vis, and a harbour or sheltered bay within reach most of the day.
More experience: the Kornati archipelago, reached from Šibenik or Zadar, is a maze of low stone islands with few facilities. In Istria and the Kvarner Gulf, from Pula, the bora can blow hard with little warning, so plan open crossings for settled days.
Travelling as a family or a larger group? Catamarans for charter in Croatia sail flat and give every cabin more space.
Check-in, deposit and the charter week
Most bareboat yachts in Croatia are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday. At check-in the base goes through the boat, its equipment and the inventory with you, and you leave a security deposit, which is returned after check-out if the boat comes back undamaged. Tourist tax, fuel and marina fees along the way come on top of the charter price.
Each listing shows the price and availability for your dates before you book. For every sailing area, see yacht charter in Croatia.
