On a bareboat charter you hire the yacht without a skipper and sail it yourself: you plan the route, choose the anchorages and set the pace. Greece is one of the best places in Europe to do it, from the sheltered Ionian and the Saronic Gulf to the island-hopping of the Cyclades. Compare sailing yachts and catamarans available bareboat below, with the price and availability for your week.

What is a bareboat charter?
Bareboat means the boat comes without a skipper or crew. One of your group acts as skipper and is responsible for the yacht, the crew and the route for the week. The charter company hands over the boat ready to sail and shows you round it at check-in; after that, where you go is up to you.
If you would rather relax while someone else sails, choose a skipper, or see crewed yachts in Greece, with a skipper and often a host or cook on board.
Licence rules for bareboat charter in Greece
In Greece, the skipper of a bareboat yacht needs a recognised sailing licence, such as the ICC, and one more crew member needs sailing experience. The charter company will usually ask for a copy of the licence and a crew list before the charter. If nobody in your group holds a licence, add a professional skipper; many Greek yachts offer one.
Where to go on a bareboat charter in Greece
First bareboat charter: the Ionian Islands around Lefkada and Corfu have sheltered water, gentle afternoon breezes and short hops between anchorages. The Saronic Gulf outside Athens is just as easy, with Aegina, Poros and Hydra close by.
Experienced crews: the Cyclades are the classic island-hopping area, but in July and August the meltemi, a strong northerly wind, blows across the Aegean. Plan that route only if your crew is confident in strong wind.
Travelling as a family or a larger group? Catamarans for charter in Greece sail flat and give every cabin more space.
Check-in, deposit and the charter week
Most bareboat yachts in Greece are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday. At check-in the base goes through the boat, its equipment and the inventory with you, and you leave a security deposit, which is returned after check-out if the boat comes back undamaged. The amount depends on the boat and the charter company.
