Charter a yacht in Mallorca (Majorca) and sail the Bay of Palma, the cliffs of the Serra de Tramuntana, Cap de Formentor and the Cabrera national park. The bases are in Palma, Can Pastilla, El Arenal, Andratx, Port de Pollença and Cala d'Or, and Menorca and Ibiza are within reach. Where do Mallorca yacht charters start?
The main hub is Palma de Mallorca, the island's capital, with marinas such as La Lonja and Club de Mar on the Bay of Palma. Further east along the bay are Can Pastilla, home of the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, and El Arenal. Andratx (Port d'Andratx) in the south-west is the gateway to the Tramuntana coast and the crossing to Ibiza. Port de Pollença lies in a wide, sheltered bay in the north, and Cala d'Or is the base for the coves of the south-east.
Where can you sail from Mallorca?
South of the island lies the Cabrera archipelago, a national park: anchoring is not allowed, you need a permit, and you moor to the park's buoys, which you book in advance. The north-west coast along the Serra de Tramuntana is steep and spectacular but has few harbours, with Port de Sóller as the main shelter, so save it for settled weather. From Port de Pollença, Cap de Formentor at the tip of its peninsula is a short sail away, and the Bay of Alcúdia lies just to the south. The south-east has calas such as Cala Mondragó and Cala Figuera. Menorca is a day's sail from Port de Pollença, and Ibiza a long day from Andratx or Palma.
Bareboat or with a skipper in Mallorca?
Most yachts are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday. To sail bareboat you need a licence recognised in Spain for the size of the boat and the area; EU and EEA visitors can usually use their home licence within its limits, and many charter companies ask for an ICC. Without one, add a skipper or choose a crewed yacht. July and August are the busiest weeks; June and September are quieter, with warm water. See also Ibiza, all of Spain and the Mediterranean.
