Where to charter a yacht in Italy
Sardinia: the island has more charter yachts than anywhere else in Italy, most of them on the north-east coast around Portisco, Olbia and Cannigione, close to the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena archipelago. In the south, Cagliari and Carloforte open up quieter waters. See yacht charter in Sardinia.
Sicily: Capo d'Orlando and Portorosa on the north coast are a short sail from the Aeolian Islands – Lipari, Vulcano, Salina and Stromboli. From Trapani and Marsala in the west you reach the Egadi Islands. See yacht charter in Sicily.
Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast: charter bases in Salerno, Procida, Castellammare di Stabia and Naples put Capri, Ischia, Positano and Amalfi within a day's sail.
Tuscany and Liguria: from the Tuscan coast you sail to Elba and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago; further north, Portofino and Chiavari are the start for the Italian Riviera and the Cinque Terre.

Sailboat, catamaran or motor yacht?
Most charter boats in Italy are sailboats and catamarans. A catamaran gives a group more space, separate cabins and a stable ride at anchor – see catamaran charter in Italy. Motor yachts and gulets usually come with a skipper and crew.
Bareboat or with a skipper?
To charter a yacht bareboat in Italy, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC or a national sailing licence, and charter companies usually also ask for a VHF radio certificate (SRC). If nobody in your group has them, add a skipper; most Italian charter yachts offer one. Each listing shows which options it has.
What affects the price?
The price depends on the size and type of boat and, most of all, on the week. July and August are the most expensive weeks; in May, June, September and October the same boat often costs much less. Most charter yachts in Italy are rented by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and some bases also offer shorter charters. Each listing shows the price for your dates before you book, and whether marina fees or a security deposit are paid at the base.
