Greece has more charter yachts than any other country in the Mediterranean, spread over six sailing areas: from the Saronic Gulf outside Athens to the Ionian Islands in the west, the Cyclades and Dodecanese in the Aegean and the Sporades in the north. Compare sailboats, catamarans and motor yachts from every Greek base on one page, bareboat, with a skipper or fully crewed.

Where to charter a yacht in Greece

Saronic Gulf and Athens: most Greek charters start at Alimos Marina in Athens, with more bases in Lavrion and Piraeus. Aegina, Poros and Hydra are short hops away, which makes the Saronic the easiest first charter in Greece.

Ionian Islands: Lefkada, Preveza and Corfu lie in sheltered water with gentle afternoon winds and short distances between anchorages – the favourite area for families and first-time skippers.

Cyclades: from Paros and Mykonos you reach the most famous islands in the Aegean. In July and August the meltemi, a strong northerly wind, blows across the Cyclades, so the area suits experienced crews or a charter with a skipper.

Dodecanese and Sporades: Rhodes and Kos are the bases for the Dodecanese, with longer passages close to the Turkish coast. In the north, Volos and Skiathos open up the green Sporades and their marine park.

Bareboat, skippered or crewed?

Many Greek yachts can be chartered bareboat. In Greece that requires a recognised sailing licence, such as the ICC, for the skipper and one more crew member with sailing experience. If nobody in your group holds one, add a professional skipper, or choose a crewed yacht with a skipper and host on board. Each listing shows which options it offers.

When to go and how booking works

The Greek sailing season runs from April to October. May, June and September bring warm water, steadier winds and quieter anchorages; July and August are the busiest and most expensive weeks. Most charter yachts are booked by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and each listing shows the price and availability for your dates before you book.
