Where to hire a boat in Croatia
Central Dalmatia: Split, Trogir and the marinas at Kaštela, Seget Donji, Rogoznica and Primošten are the busiest charter bases in the country. From here Šolta, Brač, Hvar and Vis are within a day's sail, and Split airport sits between the marinas.
North Dalmatia: Zadar and the large marina at Sukošan (D-Marin Dalmacija), together with Biograd and Murter, are the gateway to the Kornati National Park and hundreds of uninhabited islands. Šibenik opens up the Krka river and its waterfalls.
South Dalmatia: from Dubrovnik you reach the Elafiti islands, Mljet and Korčula – fewer boats, and some of the most beautiful anchorages on the coast.
Istria and Kvarner: Pula and Krk suit shorter trips and crews driving from central Europe, with the Brijuni islands and the Kvarner Gulf close by.

Bareboat or with a skipper?
To hire a yacht bareboat in Croatia, the skipper needs a recognised sailing licence, such as the ICC, and someone on board needs a VHF radio certificate (SRC). If nobody in your group has them, add a professional skipper; most yachts in Croatia offer one. Each listing shows which options it has.
When to go and how booking works
The sailing season runs from April to October. In summer the maestral, a steady north-westerly, fills in most afternoons, which makes for easy sailing between the islands; the bora can blow hard from the north-east, mostly outside the summer months. May, June and September are quieter and cheaper than July and August. Most charter yachts are hired by the week, Saturday to Saturday, and each listing shows the price and availability for your dates before you book.
