RIB vs Archipelago Jeep vs Bowrider: Three Popular Choices Compared

RIB vs Archipelago Jeep vs Bowrider: Three Popular Choices Compared

Heading out into the Scandinavian archipelago and wondering which boat type suits you best? RIB, archipelago jeep (skjærgårdsjeep), and bowrider are three of the most popular choices – and each has its strengths. In this guide, we compare them side by side.

Each Type in Brief

RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat)

A RIB has a rigid hull with inflatable tubes (sponsons) along the sides. This combination delivers extreme stability, high speed, and excellent sea-keeping ability. Typical length: 18–28 feet, engine: 100–400 hp. Originally developed for rescue and military use, the RIB is now one of Scandinavia's most popular recreational boats.

Archipelago Jeep (Skjærgårdsjeep)

The archipelago jeep is a Scandinavian speciality – a robust, open aluminium or fibreglass boat with high freeboard, a spacious deck, and good wave handling. Typical length: 18–24 feet, engine: 60–200 hp. Built to withstand rough waters and transport people and gear safely.

Bowrider

A bowrider is an open motorboat with a seating group in the bow. Fibreglass or composite hull, typically 17–24 feet, engine: 150–350 hp. Versatile and social – popular for water sports, swimming, and day trips.

Speed and Performance

The RIB is the fastest of the three. With lighter hulls and powerful engines, a 24-foot RIB can easily exceed 50 knots. The inflatable sponsons provide damping in rough conditions, which means you can maintain high speed even in waves.

The bowrider is second on speed. It planes quickly and delivers a sporty driving experience in calm water. In rough seas, however, you need to slow down more than you would in a RIB.

The archipelago jeep is not built for top speed, but for reliability and comfort in all weather. 25–40 knots is more than enough for transport between islands and fishing spots.

Waves and Sea-Keeping

This is where the RIB and the archipelago jeep clearly separate from the bowrider. The RIB's sponsons absorb impacts and provide stability even in demanding conditions. The archipelago jeep's deep V-hull and high freeboard allow it to handle strong seas without soaking the passengers.

The bowrider is best in calm waters. The low bow and open design mean that spray enters the boat earlier. For lakes and sheltered fjords, this is not a problem – but on open sea, you feel the difference.

Comfort and Practical Use

The bowrider wins on comfort with upholstered seats, a social bow seating group, and a design that invites swimming and sunbathing. For a relaxed day with friends, it is hard to beat.

The RIB is more spartan. Seats are typically hard benches or jockey seats, and there is little weather protection. On the plus side, it is almost indestructible – the sponsons can take collisions with docks and rocks that would damage a fibreglass boat.

The archipelago jeep is the practical workhorse. A large open deck for equipment, fishing rods, and picnic gear. Not the most comfortable for sunbathing, but excellent for fishing, diving, and transport.

Who Should Choose What?

Choose a RIB if you:

  • Want maximum speed and excitement
  • Sail in exposed waters
  • Need stability in rough seas
  • Plan island-hopping over longer distances

Choose an archipelago jeep if you:

  • Prioritise robustness and reliability
  • Go fishing or diving
  • Need good cargo space
  • Want an all-weather boat

Choose a bowrider if you:

  • Prioritise comfort and a social setting
  • Go water skiing or wakeboarding
  • Mainly sail in sheltered waters
  • Want a versatile day boat for the whole family

Summary

Three boats, three philosophies. The RIB is the fastest and toughest. The archipelago jeep is the most robust and practical. The bowrider is the most comfortable and versatile for day trips. Try them all at Ship O'Hoi and find your favourite.
