Karlskrona and the Blekinge Archipelago by Boat
Karlskrona and the Blekinge Archipelago by Boat
While Stockholm's archipelago and Bohuslän get most of the attention, the Blekinge archipelago in southeast Sweden sits quietly as a hidden gem. The water is warmer, the channels calmer, and the islands greener than further north. Karlskrona, the naval city with UNESCO World Heritage status, is the natural starting point for an unforgettable boat trip.
Karlskrona – The Naval City
Karlskrona was founded in 1680 by Karl XI as the main base for the Swedish navy, a role it has maintained for over 300 years. The naval base is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city's architecture reflects its grand past. The squares, churches, and old military buildings give the city a unique character.
From the centrally located guest harbour, everything is within easy reach. The Naval Museum is a must-visit – it's the Nordic region's largest maritime museum and houses a submarine you can board.
The Archipelago – Warm and Sheltered
The Blekinge archipelago consists of over 1,000 islands and is known for having some of the warmest swimming temperatures in all of Sweden. Water temperatures can reach 22–24°C in July and August, making it perfect for families with children.
Key islands to visit:
Aspö – The largest island in the archipelago, connected to the mainland by road. Aspö has a guest harbour, shop, and fine swimming spots. The southern tip is particularly beautiful.
Hasslö – Just outside Karlskrona, with a popular guest harbour and family-friendly beaches. Hasslö Havsbad is perfect for children.
Sturkö – The second-largest island, home to one of Blekinge's finest sandy beaches: Hästholmen. The water is shallow and warm – ideal for the youngest members of the family.
Ungskär – A small island in the outer archipelago with a natural harbour and stunning sunsets. Perfect for an overnight anchor.
Tjärö – A nature gem with hiking trails, swimming spots, and a small guesthouse. Tjärö has been a favourite among Swedish boaters for generations.
Family-Friendly Waters
What makes Blekinge especially attractive for families is the sheltered waters. The archipelago acts as a natural breakwater, and between the islands the water is typically mirror-calm. This makes it safe for inexperienced navigators and comfortable for children unaccustomed to rough seas.
Distances are short – most islands lie just 15–30 minutes apart by motorboat. You can easily visit 2–3 islands in a day without rushing.
