5 Perfect Boat Trips in Helsinki's Archipelago

5 Perfect Boat Trips in Helsinki's Archipelago

Helsinki is one of few European capitals where you can be anchored at a nature island with a sandy beach just 20 minutes from the city centre. The archipelago outside the Finnish capital offers fortresses, nature parks, and quiet islets that feel miles away from urban life. Here are five boat trips that show Helsinki's archipelago at its best.

1. Suomenlinna – The Fortress Island

Suomenlinna is Helsinki's most famous landmark after the Cathedral. This sea fortress from 1748 spans six islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With your own boat, you can moor at the guest harbour and explore bastions, tunnels, museums, and cafés at your own pace.

Route: Helsinki centre → Suomenlinna (1.5 nm, approximately 15 minutes). The guest harbour holds about 50 boats.

Highlights: The Fortress Museum, submarine Vesikko, the dry docks, and the atmospheric walk along the walls at sunset.

2. Pihlajasaari – Helsinki's Beach Paradise

Pihlajasaari (Rönnskär in Swedish) is the most popular nature island in Helsinki. The island is split into two parts connected by a bridge, and the western section has one of the city's best-known beaches. Locals come here to barbecue, swim, and soak up the summer.

Route: Helsinki → Pihlajasaari (2 nm, approximately 20 minutes). Anchoring possible on the west side.

Tip: Bring barbecue supplies and enjoy an evening on the island. The atmosphere is magical when the midnight sun shines over the water in June.

3. Vallisaari – The Newly Opened Nature Gem

Vallisaari was a military restricted area until 2016, when the island was finally opened to the public. The result is a nearly untouched nature island with forests, meadows, fortress ruins, and quiet trails. Nature has been left to develop undisturbed for decades, and the biodiversity is impressive.

Route: Helsinki → Vallisaari (2 nm, approximately 20 minutes). Limited guest harbour – arrive early.

Don't miss: The old powder magazine in the centre of the island and the views from the fortress ruins.

4. Lonna – The Little Charmer

Lonna is a small islet in the middle of the harbour basin, with a café, restaurant, and sauna. The island is perfect for a quick stop between other destinations. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed.

Route: Helsinki → Lonna (1 nm, approximately 10 minutes). Guest dock on the south side.

Tip: Book a table at the restaurant for lunch with a view of all of Helsinki.

5. Outer Archipelago – Isosaari and Beyond

For those who want to go further: the outer archipelago offers wild islets, bird colonies, and open sea. Isosaari (formerly military) has beautiful sandy beaches and a new sauna. From here, you see nothing but the sea and the horizon.

Route: Helsinki → Isosaari (5 nm, approximately 35 minutes). Further out toward Krokö and Mjölö for the adventurous.

Important: The outer archipelago is more exposed. Check the weather forecast carefully and have experience navigating open waters.

Practical Tips

  • Boat type: A daycruiser or motorboat is perfect for these trips. A sailboat also works well but requires more time.
  • Season: June–August is best. Midsummer (Juhannus) is magical but busy.
  • Facilities: Suomenlinna has full services. Other islands have limited facilities – bring what you need.
  • Sauna: Finnish culture demands that you try an island sauna. Lonna and Pihlajasaari have public saunas.
