Where to Refuel by Boat in the Oslofjord (+ Tips)

# Where to Refuel by Boat in the Oslofjord (+ Tips)

One of the practical challenges of boating is knowing where to refuel. Unlike on the road, there isn't a gas station at every corner. Here's an overview of the main fueling stations in the Oslofjord.

Waterside Fuel Stations

Oslo Area

  • Aker Brygge Marina – Gasoline and diesel. Central and easily accessible. Can be busy on weekends.
  • Bestumkilen / Skøyen Marina – Gasoline and diesel. Quieter than Aker Brygge.
  • Snarøya (Sjølyst Marina) – Gasoline and diesel. Ample space at the dock.

Inner Oslofjord

  • Drøbak Marina – Gasoline and diesel. Near the guest harbor.
  • Son – Fuel available at the marina. Check opening hours.
  • Fagerstrand – Gasoline and diesel. Good stop on the way south.

Vestfold

  • Horten – Gasoline and diesel at Horten guest harbor.
  • Tønsberg (Kaldnes Marina) – Gasoline and diesel. Good capacity.
  • Sandefjord – Fuel available in the outer harbor.
  • Stavern – Gasoline and diesel. Nice location by the guest harbor.

Prices and Payment

Boat fuel prices are generally higher than at regular gas stations – expect a surcharge of NOK 2–5 per liter. Diesel typically costs NOK 20–25/liter, gasoline NOK 22–28/liter (prices fluctuate with the market).

Most waterside fuel stations accept credit cards. Some older facilities may require cash or a prepaid token.

Tips for Saving Fuel

  1. Maintain steady speed – constant RPM is more efficient than accelerating and decelerating.
  2. Trim the boat correctly – incorrect trim can increase consumption by 20–30%.
  3. Keep the hull clean – marine growth significantly increases drag.
  4. Reduce weight – don't pack more than necessary.
  5. Plan your route – avoid unnecessary detours and going against the current.

What If You Run Out?

Running out of fuel at sea isn't dangerous, but it's inconvenient. A few tips:

  • Always carry a reserve – a small jerry can with 5–10 liters can save the day.
  • Call the maritime rescue service – they can often assist with emergency fueling.
  • Contact fellow boaters – most are happy to help in emergencies.
